Here is our wrap up of the final day of the Screenwiter's World Conference.
- 7:30 - Quick morning email check.
- 7:55 - Finally get off internet, can't remember if I checked my email. Facebook was OK the three times I checked it, Twitter looks good, Chive doesn't update on weekends, no big fantasy football injuries, etc... but I can't remember if I checked my email.
- 8:03 - Give Dustin the "Wake up loser" pep talk and tell him that I am going to take a quick 57 minute shower to try and wake up.
- 9:05 - We're late for the conference, decide that stopping for donuts won't change much now.
- 9:40 - Actually arrive at conference. It's like we're giving back the free hours we took from them yesterday.
- 10:20 - In comedy writing workshop. Failed the humor test they gave, must now shut down comedy blog.
- 10:25 - Just kidding, I'm back.
- 10:35 - They are asking for three volunteers to display what comedy looks like. All I can hear is my Dad's voice in my head from when I went to the Law Enforcement Academy "It's like I learned at boot camp... Don't volunteer for anything".
- 10:36 - I have been "voluntold", I mean picked by the instructor.
- 10:40 - Physical comedy display. I am way bigger than the petite woman and older man I am working with. What can go wrong?
- 10:45 - Well, I made everyone laugh and didn't hurt anyone. I'll call that a win.
- 11:00 Talked to director who taught the class. Had good rapport and took chance by telling him one of our unwritten comedy ideas. He loved it.
- 11:01 - Now I hope he doesn't love it too much.
- 11:03 - Now I'm really hoping he doesn't love it too much.
- 11:07 - Oh well, it will be fine.
- 11:30 - Last nugget from the classes. "Don't write planned jokes and situations for comedies. Let it flow from your characters.
- 11:40 - Listening to two producers at the next table talk about their secrets for letting writers get work to them. My "spider sense" is telling me I should listen to them. Thank you law enforcement training of looking like I'm doing something else while I am listening.
- 11:42 - Sticking with the law enforcement ease dropping front, one exec is talking about how well he relates to the police officer point of view and mindsets in stories. (he doesn't)
- 11:45 - Something important came up. I just remembered to check my fantasy football score for the first time. I'm winning.
- 12:30 - And that's a wrap. The conference is over. It was a good trip and we enjoyed ourselves. Now it is off to the beach to relax.
